Happy New Year Six Mile Lake Cottagers

We are nearing the end of another trip around the sun and look forward to a happy new year in 2024. Indeed, there are many things in our plans already and here are a few of them.

Come join us as a volunteer

We also would like to remind you that we are still looking for volunteers to help with some roles we need to fill:

  • Communications Officer We’re looking for someone to coordinate our communications activities. We’re also looking for anyone with experience in graphic design and who would like to lend a hand. We’d love to hear from you.
  • Promotional Products Coordinator We’re looking for someone to help with sourcing new promotional items.
  • Volunteer Coordinator We need someone to keep track of and recruit volunteers, not just for the regatta but for many of our activities.
  • Bookkeeper Working with Rick Jocsak, this involves basic bookkeeping such as writing cheques, billing, bank deposits and preparation of materials for the independent statement reviewer.
  • New Cottager Outreach We would like to form a new cottager visiting committee, so that new cottagers can be welcomed and brought up to speed with the many things that are going on at the lake.

As the saying goes, ‘many hands make light work’ and we encourage you to join us. It’s so much fun participating in bringing about the things that help make our community even more awesome!

A new look for the Echoes

Rick Vidug has volunteered to take over the production of our Echoes newsletter beginning this spring. He will be working with Harold Toiviainen. Both are excited about creating a new look and are appealing to anyone else who would like to join the team. This could be a great opportunity for students who are studying graphic arts, graphic design or journalism. As always, if you have photos or stories you would like to submit, please send them to info@sixmilelake.net .

The Six Mile Lake Directory

2024 is a directory year. Now is a good time to make sure your information in our directory is accurate. Take a moment and look at your 2022 directory and if you have any changes please let Sarah know at membership@sixmilelake.net

Township Programs of Note

The Township of Georgian Bay has 2 programs we thought would be good to pass along:

  • Food Recycler Program – The Township of Georgian Bay is providing an opportunity for residents of Georgian Bay to purchase Food Cyclers. This program is financially subsidized by the Township and is intended for Residents only.  More information on the program can be found here: https://www.gbtownship.ca/en/township-hall/resources/Documents/Georgian-Bay_Municipal-Pilot-Resident-Flyer—2023.pdf
  • Spring Tree Program – Severn Sound Environmental Association and the Township of Georgian Bay are working together to provide property owners in the Severn Sound watershed, Port Severn/Honey Harbour area with reasonably priced, native tree and shrub seedlings for planting in early spring 2024.  Tree Seedlings must be pre-ordered.  The deadline for ordering is Friday January 12, 2024.   A limited number of seedlings are available and the program often sells out of many species – order early to avoid disappointment.  For more information, visit the township’s website here: https://www.gbtownship.ca/en/news/spring-tree-ordering-time.aspx

A note about winter safety

Please have a safe holiday season and happy new year. As we prepare this message, there is currently little if any ice on the lake. We understand that this will be a mild winter. Please exercise caution when venturing out on the ice. If you don’t know, don’t go!

As many of you will be using your wood stoves at the cottage, please make sure to check that your smoke and CO2 detectors are working.
