Be Safe Out on the Ice

The SMLCA board hopes you will enjoy the splendour of winter at the lake but please be cautious when venturing out on the ice, especially if you decide to go beyond the marked snowmobile trails. Regardless of ice thickness, there are always danger spots due to currents.

With all the snow, there are many slushy patches which can bog down and immobilize your snowmobile. As always, if you don’t know, don’t go. With all the snowfall we have had lately, we also remind you to make sure your 911 sign is visible and to check furnace vents to make sure they are not covered.

Volunteers Needed!

We held a special board meeting to discuss operational strategy and identified several initiatives in which we could use help:

  • Board Member We have one seat open on our board. This is a great opportunity to be involved at the decision-making level on the business and activities that contribute to making our community such an awesome thing. It’s also a great opportunity to get to know people on the lake. We usually meet once a month online for two hours.
  • Communications Officer We’re looking for someone to create, coordinate and implement strategies for our communications activities which include ECHOES, eblasts and social media.
  • Promotional Products Coordinator We’re looking for someone to manage our current promotional products and to source new ones.
  • Bookkeeper Working with Rick Jocsak, this involves basic bookkeeping such as writing cheques, billing, bank deposits and preparation of materials for the independent statement reviewer. We don’t have a lot of transactions and this would take a few hours per month.
  • Welcome Committee We have formed a new cottager visiting committee, so that new cottagers can be welcomed and brought up to speed with the many things that are going on at the lake. If you would like to help out, please let us know.
  • Environment Committee We want to form a committee to focus on our environmental efforts and to coordinate articles, promotional materials and other information on subjects and services pertinent to Six Mile Lake.  This is a very important in maintaining the quality of our lake and in addition to volunteers sitting on this committee, we are looking for someone to chair this committee.
  • Kid’s and Teen Connect We are reaching out to the community to see if someone is willing to restart the Connect programs  to bring kids and teens together.
    • Closer Ties with Road Associations We hope to establish a closer link with the road associations on the lake so that together we can more effectively support each other and serve the lake community. If you are on a road association, please reach out to us at info@sixmilelake.net so that we can get contact info on the secretary or president.
  • Website Rebuild Committee We have been talking about rebuilding the website for several years and now that we have Wild Apricot up and running, we would like to rebuild and modernize our website. Anyone with an aptitude for website creation would be welcome to join our new committee.

Come join us. Together we can have fun building and supporting our lake community! Send inquiries to info@sixmilelake.net .

Charity Golf Tournament for the Food Bank

Although there was insufficient interest to continue our Six Mile Lake golf tournament, we know there are cottagers out there who would enjoy playing together. Here’s your chance!

In cooperation with our neighbouring cottage associations, we are participating in a charity golf tournament to benefit the food bank that will take place on Saturday May 10th at Seguin Valley Golf Course.  The price is $150, which includes cart, BBQ chicken and rib dinner, and prizes. Ideally, we will be looking for three teams of four players to represent Six Mile Lake. We are also looking for prize donations to go into a silent auction. The deadline for registration is April 30th, 2025.

Registration can be done online here: Seguin Valley Golf Club 2025 Tournament Registration.  Please ensure you select the correct event when registering: ‘Single Player Entry’ or ‘Team Entry’ for the All Associations Event – May 10.

If you are interested in helping us support this event, please contact Carolyn St. Louis at srapoinfo@gmail.com or Sean Hilditch at president@gibsonlake.net  and copy us as well at info@sixmilelake.net.

FOCA (Federation of Ontario Cottagers Association)

The SMLCA is a member of FOCA. One of the many benefits of being a FOCA member is their informative monthly newsletter called Elerts. We encourage everyone on the lake to sign up for their E-Alerts (Free service), so that you can access FOCA benefits which include:

  • Visibility into FOCA’s excellent projects.
  • Access to FOCA’s helpline (emails or calls).
  • Access to members-only material.
  • Special member pricing for FOCA events.
  • Access to special offers from sponsors, including Cottage First Insurance, where you can bundle insurance for your cottage, boat, and home. One resident recently discovered a significant benefit to buying cottage insurance through the FOCA group insurance plan.

To sign up, click here. In the second step, you’ll enter your personal email address, as well as “Six Mile Lake Cottagers Association” and set up a password. You will receive a confirmation email from FOCA.
