Area Councillor Notice – Waste Management Changes

The following is a note from the Area Councillor, Jon Lett, regarding waste management changes.

Waste Management In Our Township

Important Update On Implementation Dates For Changes

“The resolution (see attachment) passed by the Township Council reflects the recommendations of the Waste Cost Review Committee, (WCRC) with only one minor amendment (see point number 7 in the resolution)”.

A number of factors came into play regarding the changes and dates to implement these changes. Because of the various forms of collection, the locations and what we deemed to be reasonable notice provisions for residents, staff and the contractor we have come up with the following dates that changes will occur.

Key Changes:

  1. Winter bin placements: These bin sites have been eliminated and the bins will not be returned to these locations.
  2. Free Large Object Disposal will commence by the end of November 2008. (Baxter and Tower Road Transfer Stations only)
  3. Winter Closure of the Honey Harbour and 12 Mile Bay Compounds is planned for January 6th with re-opening May 2nd, 2009. Closure in the fall of 2009 will occur at the end of October.
  4. Final closure of Big Chute and Crooked Bay Compounds will be January 6th.
  5. Expanded Door to Door pick-up service for new areas of coverage commences on Wednesday May 6, 2009. Expanded winter door to door service will commence next November (2009).

Since the WCRC has completed its recommendations, a new committee has been proposed to Council with a mandate
to monitor the changes, seek input from interested parties and make further recommendations (if necessary) with
respect to waste management in our Municipality. We are happy to field questions for clarification at this time.
Comments, whether good or bad in regards to changes may or may not be responded to immediately and if not will be
referred to the new committee for discussion at their first meeting. (We don’t anticipate a meeting until sometime
in January). For more detail, there is a January 30th, 2008 report and minutes of all of the Committee meetings.
