Just a quick note to highlight some of the activity at Council recently:

  • As most of the permanent residents already know, the Waste compounds at Crooked Bay Road, and the Big Chute have been permanently closed, and the compounds at Honey Harbour and 12 Mile Bay have been closed for the winter. The members of the Waste Cost Review Committee have been responding to calls from residents and assisting them in finding alternative disposal sites where necessary. This activity will be handed off to the Waste Cost Liaison Committee in the near future.
  • Council has established the Waste Management Liaison Committee, to continue the work of improving the Waste Management in the Township. The committee is currently comprised of Councillors Braid, Lett and Sutcliffe and is soliciting membership from the public. We hope to get representation from all areas of the Township to ensure that we have a balanced view. If you are interested in participating as a committee member, please contact the Township Offices or any of Councillors Braid, Lett or Sutcliffe directly. The committee will begin meeting later in January to review the implementation of the earlier recommendations, monitor the cost savings capture, and to initiate the process for residents and groups to discuss their concerns.
  • The Port Severn Strategic Planning Draft Report from EDA is now available; hardcopy to read and leave at the front desk of the Township Offices, and both Libraries, or download from the Township report is quite comprehensive and highlights both the opportunities that we have in front of us, as well as some of the obstacles we will face going forward.
  • Council received a presentation from MCN regarding a new Provincial initiative to increase coverage of HS Internet. The Township will be making a request to the Province for funding additional infrastructure in the Township, with the assistance of MCN. In addition, Council heard from 2 ISP’s that they are intending to erect and “light up” 2 new towers in the township to provide more HS internet coverage. Both of these are good news for the Township and indicate a continued effort to improve the internet services available here.

That’s it for now. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please contact me.
