Last month we posted on our Facebook page and our website about a proposed new Rogers Cell Phone tower at the North end of the lake. We wanted to let everyone know that the public consultation process has been extended. The reason for the extension is to accommodate additional information that was not readily known at the time of our original post.
First – the height of the new tower is now known to be 50 feet higher than the existing Bell tower that is also located at the north end of the lake which puts it at approximately 70 feet above the existing tree line.
Second – the location of the tower is open for discussion. Meaning, we can ask for other viable locations to be assessed that would reduce the visual impact but still provide an upgrade to our services. A location under discussion would be the old garbage bin site on Crooked Bay Road closer to the 400 highway.
The SMLCA believes there is solid support for increased cell phone and internet coverage to the lake but that a tower of this height above the tree line would present a significant visual impact which has been a cause for concern with our members in the past. We want to hear from the community, however, and are soliciting input and asking for opinions on the proposed tower given this new information.
